Learn bespoke shoe-making

Must say I’m more than a wee bit excited that Louise wants to hand-on her bespoke shoe-making skills…there is nothing more I’d love to do than make my own footwear!

It’s Dunedin-based artisan shoemaker Louise Clifton’s dream to enliven the art of shoemaking in New Zealand by inspiring, engaging and educating future shoemakers. In 2013 she will be running a series of workshops and lectures in leather footwear and accessories around New Zealand.

Amazingly, there are no shoemaking schools in New Zealand. Aspiring shoemakers have to venture offshore as she did – to Australia, or further. Louise is passionate about shoemaking in New Zealand. Shoemaking tuition would not only enrich individuals, but would also benefit local theatre and film industries, tourism, tertiary institutions and design and manufacturing industries.

And now Louise is back in Dunedin equipped with the know-how to graduate as a fully-fledged bespoke shoemaker – and she wants to share these skills! But first she need the tools and materials to be able to do so.

To help realise her project Louise has begun a crowdfunding campaign. The budget for this project is $1700.00. The campaign is open now and closes Monday24th September at 6pm. With the donations she will buy the leather, glue, soling, and tools such as punches, awls and lasting pliers needed to gully equip her studio so that she may inspire, engage and educate others. And there’s rewards for those that pledge!

Daisy, Daisy….

Dunedin based jewellery label Underground Sundae‘s designer,  Anne-Mieke Ytsma draws inspiration for her SS 12/13 collection, from a single still-life drawing of a fruit basket by Carravagio, as well as images of Tokyo street fashion portraits from cult fanzine ‘Fruits’, the fanzine showcases the uniqueness of fashion in Harajuku, throughout the 1990s.

Beautiful Stella

I don’t know what’s up with Dunedin being home to so many damn attractive people. Walking down George St, it’s not unusual to encounter several beauties…usually of the female variety. One particularly stunning specimen is Stella Maxwell, who was discovered by agent Aliana McDaniel (of Ali McD models) while she was still a student. Stella is now traveling the world, featuring in magazines such as, iD, Purple, Dossier, Elle and doing campaigns for the likes of H&M and lookbooks for Nasty Gal.

Here’s some shots of Stella(The blonde)for the Nasty Gal lookbook…shot by Terry Richardson!!!

Phillip Hawkins is emerging

Phillip Hawkins is one of the 10 finalists in this year’s Westpac Young Designer Awards…and he’s one of three from Dunedin! The first time I saw this collection was at the 2012 iD International Emerging Designer Awards and I must say it was my absolute favourite entry. Phillip’s collection is loosely based around a series of photographs by Belgian photographer, Jane Kempeners. Jane captured images of concrete modernist monuments which were abandoned in desolate parts of Eastern Europe.

Political, erotical, mystical

Boutique label Moodie Tuesday‘s vision can be summed up by the words of Pop Art legend Claes Oldenburg, “I am for an art that is political-erotical-mystical, that does something other than sit on it’s ass in a museum.” Moodie Tuesday encompasses the work of Dunedin artist, Jon Thom, an established artist who has exhibited his portraits in galleries since the age of eighteen. His work has won several awards and is held in private collections in New Zealand, USA, India and Europe.

For SS 12/13 a line of t-shirts has been created, featuring Jon’s work..here’s a little behind the scenes clip of him doing what he does best…creating cool shit.

The other day I found these Comme des Garcons Play sneakers in Plume and I think I may just need them…I am a bit obsessed with Comme des Garcon Play at the moment…I think it’s the ‘heart with eyes’ logo that has sucked me in!
